We are looking to add a part-time Cataloging Specialist. The position would be for 20 hours a week and would include Saturdays. The hourly rate is between $16.25 – $16.50/hr.

Cataloging Specialist

 

Catalogs fiction & non-fiction materials in print, electronic, and A/V formats and maintains catalog database accuracy. Performs technical and clerical duties to support the Library, answers patron requests for information and assistance, assists patrons with self-check and library technology, and assists with library programs. This position is for a cataloging specialist, established at 20 hours per week, and is non-benefited.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Cataloging – 30%

  • Catalogs materials by attaching local holdings to MARC records in union catalog per current consortium protocols.
  • Copy cataloging – searches OCLC for exact copy, edits the MARC record using national and local standards.
  • Original Cataloging – creates original MARC records for contribution to OCLC using Anglo-American Cataloging Rules Second edition for descriptions, Library of Congress Subject Headings for subject analysis, and Dewey Decimal Classification for classification.
  • Maintains catalog database ensuring accurate information in ILS system.
  • Assists in material selection by reading reviews on materials, reviewing best seller lists, patron requests, staff suggestions, and collection analysis results.
  • Assists in placing orders for library materials and receives and checks shipments from publishers.
  • Ensures and helps staff in making materials “shelf ready”.
  • Acts as primary contact for Talking Book Library and connects patrons to accessible materials.
  • Facilitates weeding of adult and children’s materials.
  • Works with system courier and statewide delivery
  • Ensure materials are labeled properly, troubleshoot delivery problems, prepare reports, etc.
  • Keep track of late, lost and damaged items sent through courier.
  • Interacts with community resources to enhance library collection and patron information opportunities.

Patron Assistance – 25%

  • Prepares for opening and closing.
  • Serves as the first point of contact for patrons in assistance with using library materials and information.
  • Answers the phone and routes calls.
  • Guides patrons in searching the catalog and stacks.
  • Helps access databases and navigate the Internet.
  • Assists with making copies, faxes or scans.
  • Requests ILL materials for patrons.

Circulation – 15%

  • Checks out and renews materials.
  • Processes holds.
  • Sorts and routes materials to their proper location in order to assist patrons with borrowing of materials.
  • Issues and updates library cards.
  • Collects and records fines and fees.
  • Assists with collection weeding.

Technology – 15%

  • Schedules individual technology instruction with patrons.
  • Maintains the library website and social media.
  • Identifies opportunities for formal training in the library.

Programming – 10%

  • Assists with Storywalk®
  • Assists in delivering programs to audiences of all ages in and out of the library.
  • Collaborates with co-workers to help plan the annual Summer Reading Program.

Other Duties – 5%

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Computers, tablets and other devices, software, applications, iOS/Android, Microsoft Office, social media and internet browsers.
  • The American Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom statement.
  • Public library reference services.
  • Print and online reference resources.
  • WordPress
  • Prospector

Skilled in:

  • Reference Interviewing.
  • Using and troubleshooting a variety of computers and mobile electronic devices.
  • Windows, MS Office Suite, and Publisher.
  • Using Prospector.
  • Using Innovative Interfaces, including Koha or another comparable automated library system.
  • Customer services including dealing with difficult patrons and volatile situations.

Ability to:

  • Operate various office equipment including copiers.
  • Plan and conduct age-appropriate programming.
  • Use good judgment.
  • Work in teams.
  • Work with confidential information.
  • Perform duties independently and with initiative.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment, while being able to maintain a professional and courteous attitude.

Received: Works under the general supervision of the Library Director.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or one to two years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Field of study business, computer or office management.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid current state-issued driver’s license and not be under suspension, revocation or denial nor have any prior alcohol and/or drug related driving offenses within the last five years. A driving record search will be conducted on all applicants prior to employment and will be subject to observation throughout their employment.
  • Successful candidates must pass a background investigation and physical examination in accordance with job duties prior to employment.
  • Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and may be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their employment as per City policy

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, typically office environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must on occasion lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Requires the dexterity, agility, and ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds without injuring yourself or others.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, insect stings and animals. This position does require work on the weekends and may work nights and holidays.
